TEACHER LANGUAGE
During this teaching unit I used different language frames and vocabulary to arrange groups and control the pupil’s behaviour. Their level of English was an A1, therefore, they needed very clear and easy vocabulary to understand the instructions. Moreover, they were quite naughty and noisy. So, it was important to control their behaviour and get their attention to focus on the tasks. Now, I would like to share the vocabulary and the strategies used regarding groups arrangement and behaviour control.
CLASSROOM LANGUAGE ABOUT ARRANGING GROUPS
CLASSROOM LANGUAGE ABOUT ARRANGING GROUPS
- Make groups of 4, 5,6…
- Let’s work by pairs!
- Let’s work with the classmates you are already sitting with
- Let’s work by colour teams
- This team is number one, this team is number two…
Tips for future teachers:
If you are planning to make groups you can use a very fast and effective strategy: giving numbers randomly and then gathering pupils by numbers. However, you must take into account that these groups may not be balanced, so, it is important to try to give numbers taking into account the pupils that you want to avoid being together or the other way around.

Here you have a list of very creative ways of making groups!!!
CLASSROOM LANGUAGE ABOUT BEHAVIOUR CONTROL
- Please, pay attention
- Please, can you stop it?
- You are not helping your team
- You are not participating
- Shush!
- Be quiet/calm down
- It is not time for this
Tips for future teachers:
When pupils are misbehaving or not paying attention, I used very effective strategies which consist of saying some key words and they have to answer back with some other key words. Which implies that they will stop misbehaving and they will focus their attention on me again.

Another tool to control the behavior of pupils is to encourage them to do positive things. For every positive thing, you can give them a bean which is going to be placed in a bucket. This bucket has different marks, which represent rewards. Therefore, pupils get motivated to behave well. You can also give negative beans which will not allow them to achieve the objective. Moreover, you can also decide which are the rewards and what is considered negative or positive.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT AND SCAFFOLDING FOR STUDENTS
Is time to share all the materials that have been created with the aim to provide help to students. But before you continue reading...do you know the difference between language support and scaffolding?it may seem the same but there are some differences!lets have a look! :)
We understand language support as all the materials prepared in advanced to help students for the completion of the activites (flashcards, workseets, scripts...)while scaffolding refers to the support that you give, on the fly, while they are carrying out the activities in order to help them to complete the tasks. (paraphrasing, geasturing, slowing down...). |
